Post 8: Anxiety and Depression – Are they two sides of the same coin?

Anxiety by definition is a ‘feeling of fear, dread or
uneasiness1.’ A feeling that there is an unsaid burden on your
shoulders and you do not know how to tackle it. As a young teenager I have felt
this feeling numerous times. It could be attributed to my sun sign as I am a
Cancer who feels things deeply and also that growing up I was a very shy kid. I
was afraid to voice my concerns to anyone and I would keep everything bottled
up and would write it on forums and online sites. The world of anonymity helped
me gain my confidence back but won’t really pushed me out was my journey here
in the States. Today if you meet me, that shy girl is still out there but on
the exterior is a much more vocal and outspoken girl. Mind you I do not speak
that language all the time but when the need arises.

The reason I bring up this topic to you today is because
Social Media is a very vocal culture. We see trolls and critics on posts of
celebrities and artists and anyone who has a certain number of following. These
people put out their comments and opinions about a topic or a situation without
thinking that there is a person at the end of the post who is going to read
maybe each of the comment and think about it for some time if not long. Then
there are some who are badass and don’t care about the opinions of such and I
admire to be one of them. But I have not experienced that growth of followers
yet so I am not sure how I would react to such comments.

It has taken me a while to reach this level of confidence in
myself. So I am sure I will be able to give it out back to them. But at times
there are a lot of internal struggles that people do not display neither on
social media nor any other platform. What do you do then?

It is imperative in such a situation to have a support
system. That one friend, that one parent, that one sibling to whom you can
retort back to and tell it all heart to heart. And if there is no one available
for you the best option is Journal writing. Pen those thoughts out so they
don’t take up headspace.

Another question to be addressed is Does untreated anxiety
lead to Depression?

That can be answered by a medical professional and I am not
claiming to be one of them. These are all thoughts of my own and my own journey
which I hope will help you out.

 How Have I overcome
Anxiety and Have I overcome it completely?

I try not to overthink situations anymore.

I try to be happy with what I have and my child has helped
me overcome that anxiety.

I have anxiety at times, sometimes very severe and there is
nothing I can do except let that pass through.

I hope that I can be support system to my kids to understand
their nature and if they have to go through this at any point.
