Post 7: The viruses going around

These past few days in the month of July have been so taxing for my child. This all started from the time we went to Dorney Park and he had fun in the water park on July 3rd 2021. I am writing this post as a reminder to self and to other parents.

I myself became a little lax as the covid 19 restrictions lifted.

That’s was the one time we took him out and I regret it with my whole heart now! He had fun yes but that fun has cost me a month of doctors visit, me losing work hours and most importantly seeing my child getting sick and not being able to help him.

I would therefore advise all parents please be careful.

Let me take you through the trying time that we have faced. The week during the long weekend he started by developing fever. We tried to keep the fever down with Tylenol but after a day of trying and the fever not subsiding we took him to the doctor. At the Doctors office after waiting for two hours I was told that he has cough and was given Bromfed for him and was advised to administer Fever medicine as and when needed.

I went home and did as was told. We have him Albuterol in the Nebulizer to soothe his breathing. After two more days of the same and fever not subsiding we went again to the same office and after two hours of waiting the doctor gave him antibiotics – amoxicillin.

The amoxicillin broke his fever. But I wanted to be doubly sure so we took him to his regular doctor. And she told that he has a lot of cough in his chest something like an earlier case of pneumonia. She prescribed another stronger Antibiotic – Amoxiciiling clauvulate and he started getting better.

We sent him to daycare the next week continuing to administer the dose for the antibiotics. All was well that week and then this past week he started fever again suddenly in the middle of the night on Friday. So we took him to that office again because that is open even on weekends and it is non emergency. The doctor said that this is a viral thing going on around the country as the daycares open and schools open. She gave us Bromfed and said to administer fever medication as needed.

That Saturday my son was the worst I have seen in his lifetime. He wouldn’t eat was weak and couldn’t play. The only thing I could do apart from the medicines is pray. And I did. His fever broke and then returned again in the afternoon. And then the strangest thing happened that his body stayed at room temperature but he was showing fever. We didn’t know what to do. We gave him Tylenol. And then at night he didn’t eat because he complained that he couldn’t eat as it was hurting. We checked his tongue and the tongue had developed sores.

We just tried to push liquids though him but whatever it was was only going to get worse.

The next day he developed these sores on his arms and feet. My husband said that” garmi nikadi che” and my analytics brain thought that maybe he is right as his body couldn’t diagnose the fever through temperature maybe this was it. But as the sores developed more the same analytical brain questioned the judgement. I immediately made an appointment but since the office is so booked I assume a lot of kids are getting sick, then I got the appointment this morning. My husband was going to send him to daycare this morning saying that it is okay ! And I once again was like maybe he is right. But it’s this mother brain that just takes over and thank god for that. He is diagnosed with Hand Foot and Mouth disease  caused by Coxsackie virus something which I did search on yesterday evening. But saved my judgement until I knew more. He most likely developed it from his daycare, or from my home I don’t know. But now I am slowly starting to see what I need to do. I do not want to subject him to this anymore.

The first thing to do in such a situation is have the kids wear long clothes so they don’t stretch themselves as recommended by the doctor and moisturize the body as much you regularly do. They need to stay home for 10 days and cannot go back until the skin is clear again. Also the school or daycare where they go need to be informed of the occurrence. I did mine and what they have mentioned is that they bleach the facility daily but in the advent of this virus they are going to turn off sprinkler fun. And to say I was not letting my son participate in the sprinkler either.

So you will understand me when I say that I get very upset at this situation as I feel I am doing everything right and yet my child suffers. I make him take a bath as soon as he comes from daycare. I wash my hands and feet and face. We throw all the clothes into the laundry basket. We even moved the laundry basket out of the room.

And yet for all this to happen frustrates me and irritates me so much that I feel like giving all up and sitting at home raising my child.

And I know that might not be feasible at this moment but I hope to find out some solution sooner than later.
